Beyond writing and talking about issues raised by Sherman Alexie

Since there are people creating artistic responses to Sherman Alexie's work for the Tulalip Reads for Unity on his The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian, we thought it would be great to have a place for people to connect and share their work, struggles, ideas, etc.

Please feel free to post your work, links to your work, request for ideas, feedback, see if someone else wants to work with you to create an artistic response, etc.

  1. Speaking of artistic responses, students in Debora Pontillo's Painting and Drama classes at Cascadia are going to be working on responding to True Diary from their own perspective/lens. It would be cool to see others, so we hope to connect with others.

If anyone participating in the read wants to see what Debora and her students are up to, wants to work with her and/or them, or just show them what you are doing or have done, just let her know. You can call her at (425) 352-8216 or email her at dpontillo@cascadia.edu Try putting "From a student" or "Tulalip Reads for Unity" in the subject line, as it will help her see your email and be able to respond sooner rather than later.

You can also check out the kind of work she does on her own at www.deborabarrerapontillo.com

  3. So Seimy and I have come up with a few large ideas anywhere from Sock Puppets or life size art pieces. Doesn't matter if you are an artist or an actor if you are interested let me know and we will totally work it out. We would love more help!

  4. Uhhh, I was thinking of writing a short story or something, maybe with some graphic art...or maybe more into the graphic novel/graphic short story...I have a few ideas, but writing stories is really my best bet.

  5. I am still unsure of what artistic response project to do. The book was full of emotion and I would like to create something that represents the emotions in that book... I will do more research on it today. I would like to work with a partner if anyone is interested :)

  6. Julia,
Seimy and I are interested in doing a puppet show which would really need a script if you are interested. It would have to be humorful but as we learned with Alexie's book that doesn't mean it has to lack emotion or meaning.

    Cori,
If you want to come talk with us, we can give you a few ideas or you can help us come up with new ones. We are really interested in having more partners. Let us know.

  7. Understanding the assignment a little more I have an idea of writing a song about one of the main themes in the book which, I felt, was hope for a brighter future. I have been a song writer for many years now and I believe, through song, I can really convey the emotions portrayed in Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian.

  9. Cassie, I'll think about it. I still have good ideas for my short story, something of more bicultural, belonging to two worlds and none at the same time sort of theme. However, if you need help with the script, like editor or general help, I'd be glad to give some.

  10. My partner and I plan to cook as a response to the book. What we are cooking is going to be a secret because we want it to be a surprise. However we don't plan on just expressing ourselves with food we also want to incorporated some of our and Sherman's humor.I am really excited for this project and cannot wait to see everyones responses.

  11. I really have no idea what to do for my artistic response since the book has so many different aspects to it. But I was thinking some kind of cartoon similar to the style found in the book could be fun

  12. Here is one online clickity-click cartoon maker, that I mentioned in class and another one that might work. You can also do drawing your own pictures, what a concept ;), yet thought I would put these out there, limited as they may be:

There's another one connected to it that's even better, but not as simple to use because you have to download something called a unity webplayer: http://stagedproject.com/.
