Mid- community read check in and survey

Have you (anyone looking at this blog) filled out the brief 7 question survey for the folks at NWIC-Tulalip? It is anonymous and will just give us an idea of who participated and why:

Participant Survey:
We are asking participants to complete an initial survey. This will help us with reporting back to our funding sponsor, the Tulalip Tribes Charitable Fund.

Also, as we are somewhere in the middle of the academic term, what are your thoughts on The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian, this read in general, the blogs, is it connecting to what you are reading/researching/learning in your classes, outside classes? Just some general impressions would be grand!

  1. I think I already took the survey...Because it looks suspiciously the same as the one before. From reading the Sherman Alexie book, I'm definietly more concious of the reasons and causes for, I don't know how to describe it, rasicm or prejudice. Especially in my own life. I guess, what I mean by that is that I've been reexamining the meaning of culture identity in myself.

  2. I believe Ihave taken this survey. It looks exactly like the last two surveys we were supposed to have taken. From the book, though, I have learned to be a little more careful in the way I sya things, the way I do things, and the way I look at things. Mostly my eyes were opened about racism existing today.

  3. Now that we have finished reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian and written our analysis i am pondering re-reading the book adn wondering what i would pull out of it this time around. As far as teh Blog's i know i personally am lacking and NEED to "pick it up." I just find this hard to sit down and "put my thoughts to paper" especially regarding a topic that does not "directly effect my eberyday life" although i suppose that is the point of this. I do however notice that as we are talking about this subject that there is a WHOLE LOT of Native American references in my Multi Cultural commuications class, essentially the references are brought up almost exclusively when talking about a culture that is the opposite of the "american" culture.

  4. Hi all,

I have some great ideas for the artistic response. I was thinking on doing Sock Puppets and summarizing a part of Sherman Alexie’s novel. It would be a good idea and something creative and fun to do. We would need a group of people for this and organize everything to get started. Hope some of you guys feel like doing something fun.If this doesn’t work we can do a drawing from Sherman Alexie’s novel :)

  5. Hi,
I have very few ideas for the artistic response. All I can think of is summarizing the novel. It might be cool to make a tribal paddle and get it deisigned by one of the native indians. Although this may end up being expensive.

  6. I was thinking I could tie my research paper and artistic response together. My topic for the research paper is Native Americans in the military so I want to tie together somehow Native Americans have gone from warriors on horseback to soldiers fighting in wars. Not sure what I could do for that yet, but I was thinking maybe paint a picture representing soliders as both soldiers and warriors.

  7. The book was interesting to read, unusual considering it's a book I need to read for school. I enjoyed reading the book and learned a lot about what most Native Americans go through. I talked mainly about alcoholism and poverty in my last analysis paper and I thought about choosing one of those topics for my 10 to 15 page research paper but I though most of it was repetitive and I wanted to learn something new. So right now I'm thinking about writing about mainly the Makah tribe and their traditions with whaling in general. Hopefully I'll learn a lot more about Native Americans through this process.

  8. After reading the story, I'm definitely more aware of the hardships that occur on reservations. I thought Sherman Alexies book was interesting and really funny so it keep me reading. For the artist response I was thinking of maybe doing a watercolor picture, but I'm not really sure yet. I want to do something cooler than that so I'll have to do some more brainstorming.

  9. I must say I really enjoyed reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-time Indian. Not only did it show me that I can enjoy reading, but also educated me to a degree about what it can be like for some Native Americans. I currently however am unsure about the artistic response. I like the ideas that I've heard, putting on performances and whatnot, but those are not really for me. I am wondering what else I can participate in.

  10. I think what I want to do is draw a picture that is an expression of how Junior felt as he walked into the gym of his former school as a member of the "white" team. This was a very important moment in the book, and a moment that was very painful and confusing for Junior. I think it would be fun to try to show what he might have been feeling in a drawing. It was a very hostile environment and I think it would make an interesting picture to try to capture the hostility and conflict in that moment.

  11. I enjoyed the book a lot. I don't hardly read ever and can only stick with a bo0k if it is a really good one. Such as this book, like this one; I read it in 2 weeks. Which is probably the fastest I ever read a book.
Regarding my artistic response, I was thinking about teaming up with another student and making a video. Not sure exactly what it will be able, but probably somewhere along the lines of stereotypes.

  12. Whats crackin',

I thought the book gave in inside look of life on the rez. I dont know if this was an accurate look into it but it atleast gave me a picture of it. It was a story that i could actualy sit through and i hate reading haha. So for my artistic response I'm planing on making a video on life on the rez or the incorect stereotypes people have towards Native Americans.

  13. I didn't know anything about Native Americans before I read the book "The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indina" by Sherman Alexie. There are many issues exist in Native American culture right now. Poverty, racism, and prejudice have been social issues that impact Native Americans in everyday life.

  14. It's good to know the prejudice against the Native Indians has decreased dramatically compare to decades ago. However,it won't go away if americans aren't educated with Native Indian histroy. It is very important for all Americans to know how the US government take away the Indian's lands and most of the land the Americans are living on right now used to be Native Indian's.

  15. My partner and I are thinking we will do a skit incorperated with food(s)from book. We plan to include some of Shermans humor as well of some of our own wit.

  16. I am pretty sure I have already taken this survey because it looks a lot like the last one I took.
As for the book I enjoyed reading it a lot, I hardly read for fun so for me to read this entire book it had to be really good. I liked how he added humor to everything that he said. I’m still not 100% sure what I’m going to do for the creative response part of the project. I might do something with cooking but I don’t know yet.
