What did you do and/or create for the artistic response?

Hey All,

I look forward to seeing my English 102 student artisitc responses on Monday, yet I had a preview in class today.
The assignment was to respond to Sherman Alexie's work and/or the information and experiences they've had with this class from their perspective and if they did incorporate symbols and ideas from Native American communities they needed to explain why. They also had to post one page reflections on what their work represents to them as their response, what creating it was like and so forth.  My friend and colleague Debora was really clear on saying we need to do it from where we stand and not try to just imitate others.

There was quite a range from drawings, cartoons, scenes created by students, to objects they made. Debora's Painting class is finishing a mural and her Drama students have written and acted their own scenes as their response. Their work will be cool to see. Some of them will be performing at tonight's opem mic and we are really excited to see what the NWIC students and Tulalip community members have created!!!

So, would anyone reading this like to share what they've created or any other feedback about the Tulalip Reads for Unity overall?

  1. I think it was an awesome idea to begin with. I'm really glad it was Sherman Alexie's book we chose to read too. In any case, I did a story, scene. It's not really about Native Americans, but prejudice in general. I'm interested to see what other people did though.

  2. I teamed up with fellow classmate, Omar Arredondo, and we used an online site to make a cartoon video on stereotypes. We tried to make the video funny and actually hit on multiple types of stereotypes. It turned out pretty good and if anyone would like to watch it, the site is http://www.xtranormal.com/watch/11356404/Stereotypes_are_bad%21

  3. I created some poetry and included some ative poetry and photographs of natives i found on line. I tried to write my poetry through the eyes of a Native American, yet i am not sure how i feel about it. I hope that it was not offensive, and know wish i would have taken a completely different route.

  7. My best artistic response would be the literature. Any by that I mean my blog: wooforthought.blogspot.com

By experiencing the pieces by Sherman Alexie, I was able to verbalize my expressions toward social inequality and injustices in the world.

Everyone, if you have time, should peep at my blog, please! ;)

    Best regards,
    Chris
